NOA DISMISSES NANS CONCERNS OVER PROPOSED LEARNER ID SYSTEM

The National Orientation Agency has rejected claims by the National Association of Nigerian Students that the proposed Learner Identification system amounts to an overreach by government. The agency said the initiative is intended to improve the management of learner information and strengthen planning within the education sector.

The NOA maintained that the Learner ID is designed to provide a reliable identification framework for students and other learners, helping relevant authorities keep accurate records and improve the delivery of educational services. It said the system should not be interpreted as an attempt to infringe on the rights of students.

The agency’s position followed concerns raised by NANS over the initiative, with the students’ body questioning aspects of the proposed identification system and its implications for learners. NANS had called for greater clarification and transparency regarding how students’ information would be collected, managed and used.

Responding to the concerns, the NOA stressed the importance of proper communication and public understanding of government programmes. It explained that initiatives involving learners must be implemented responsibly and with appropriate safeguards to protect the information of those covered by the system.

The agency therefore urged students and other stakeholders to seek accurate information about the Learner ID programme rather than relying on assumptions. It reiterated its willingness to engage relevant stakeholders and provide clarification on issues surrounding the initiative.
