NORWEGIAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION ASKS FIFA TO PROBE TRUMP PEACE PRIZE

The Norwegian Football Federation has asked FIFA’s ethics committee to investigate the decision to award a peace prize to United States President Donald Trump.

The request followed FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s presentation of the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to Trump during the draw ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup held in December 2025.

The Norwegian federation raised concerns over whether the award breached FIFA’s obligation to remain politically neutral.

The move came after human rights organisation FairSquare also filed a complaint with FIFA’s ethics committee, alleging that Infantino violated ethical standards by publicly aligning with Trump.

FIFA has not disclosed the criteria or process used in selecting Trump as the recipient of the peace prize.

The award attracted controversy because it coincided with repeated efforts by Trump and members of his administration to push for him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Speaking on Tuesday, Norwegian Football Federation president Lise Klaveness said the federation acted independently in approaching FIFA’s ethics committee.

“I think others (federations) knew that they could sign it if they wanted to,” she said.

“We concluded that it was useless to put pressure on anyone; it would just create friction.”

Infantino has maintained close ties with Trump ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The tournament is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
