NOUN AWARDS DEGREES TO SIX INMATES AT KUJE CUSTODIAL CENTRE
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has awarded degree certificates to six inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, marking a significant milestone in the drive to use education as a tool for rehabilitation and reintegration.
The graduates completed their studies while in custody, earning qualifications across different disciplines. The degrees awarded include two Master’s degrees in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, alongside four Bachelor’s degrees in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Political Science, Criminology, and Security Studies.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, praised the inmates for their determination and resilience. Represented by his deputy, Dr Amos Kupan, he described education as a powerful force that transforms lives and builds capacity, stressing that incarceration should not be seen as the end of personal growth.
According to him, the achievement reflects the Service’s commitment to rehabilitation rather than punishment alone, adding that the NCoS will continue to promote educational and skill-acquisition programmes that prepare inmates for productive lives after release.
The Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Christopher Jen, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to remain focused and disciplined, urging them to use their certificates as stepping stones to improve their lives and contribute positively to society.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, the Director of the NOUN Special Study Centre, Dr Francis Enobore, described the initiative as a pathway of hope. He noted that the university’s open and distance learning model makes education accessible even to marginalised groups, including inmates, and reaffirmed NOUN’s commitment to expanding similar programmes across custodial centres nationwide.
On behalf of the graduates, Abba Kyari expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Correctional Service and NOUN for providing the opportunity to study while in custody. He said the programme restored their sense of purpose and assured them that the knowledge gained would guide them toward positive change after their release.
The event also featured counselling sessions focused on re-entry, skill development, and community reintegration, reinforcing the message that education remains a powerful tool for reform, dignity, and second chances.
