The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has cautioned vandals and unauthorized individuals to keep off railway tracks as the country moves toward electrifying its rail network.

Speaking during an interview on The Exchange Podcast with Femi Soneye, Opeifa described the electrification of rail lines as a major advancement in Nigeria’s transportation system, one that significantly boosts efficiency but introduces new safety hazards.

According to him, the electric rail system is faster, safer, and more environmentally sustainable, yet it poses serious dangers to anyone who attempts to tamper with the infrastructure. He warned that vandals who try to cut or interfere with the electrified tracks face a high risk of electrocution, severe injury, or even death.

Opeifa noted that the NRC has intensified security around rail assets through surveillance technology, monitoring units, and comprehensive public awareness efforts.

“We are making strong investments in security systems, surveillance, and community sensitisation to protect both the infrastructure and the people living around these corridors,” he said.

He urged residents near rail routes to stay away from restricted zones and promptly report any suspicious activity. Opeifa emphasized that the new electric rail system represents a critical national investment that must be safeguarded.

“Modern railway infrastructure is a national asset, and ensuring its protection is a collective responsibility,” he added.

The NRC boss further explained that the electrification project forms part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing passenger experience, improving freight services, and creating more opportunities for private sector involvement in the rail sector.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
