Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA), has stressed the importance of strong institutions and a change in national attitudes to effectively tackle corruption in Nigeria. Ribadu made this call during the 9th Oba Sikiru Adetona Annual Professorial Lecture at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye.

Delivering the lecture titled ‘Corruption and National Security: Impacts and Consequences,’ through Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Ribadu pointed out that corruption has severely undermined Nigeria’s institutional framework, weakened the legitimacy of the state, and misdirected essential resources meant for development.

Ribadu highlighted that corruption directly contributes to Nigeria’s security challenges, noting that it erodes public trust and hampers the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies. He cited examples such as the misallocation of funds for military equipment and irregularities in arms procurement, which have weakened the country’s ability to address security threats.

“We cannot discuss insecurity in Nigeria without acknowledging how corruption has eroded public trust and fostered impunity. Whether it’s in the military or other sectors, the result is a diminished capacity to respond to national threats,” Ribadu said.

Despite the gravity of these challenges, Ribadu conveyed optimism, asserting that Nigeria's security and corruption issues are not insurmountable. He argued for a proactive approach focused on building a system that prevents corruption rather than simply reacting to it. “We must focus on creating a system that makes corruption impossible, rather than simply reacting to it,” he emphasized.

In his speech, Ribadu also called for a collective effort in the fight against corruption. He stressed that the battle cannot be left solely to the government, urging all Nigerians to take part in rejecting corruption in both actions and attitudes. “The fight against corruption must involve everyone—not just the government,” Ribadu stated.

Ribadu also spoke about Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to address its security challenges, particularly in the fight against Boko Haram. He revealed that over 160,000 Boko Haram combatants have surrendered, more than 300 commanders have been neutralized, and 2,500 insurgents have been rehabilitated and reintegrated into society. He praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for recognizing that security is a collective responsibility, involving not just the military but also local governments, civil society, traditional leaders, and the private sector.

Tributes were paid to Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, for his visionary leadership and long-standing commitment to fighting corruption. Ribadu lauded the monarch as a courageous leader and a staunch advocate of good governance.

The event also featured commendations from academic and political figures. Prof. Oluwatoyin Ashiru, Pro-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, referred to Oba Adetona as a living legend in leadership. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, highlighted the monarch’s wisdom and progressive leadership throughout his 91-year reign.

The lecture reinforced the message that solving Nigeria's corruption and security challenges requires a collective, nationwide effort. This effort should involve not only the government but every Nigerian, working together to build a stronger, more secure, and corruption-free nation.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
