NSCDC ADVOCATES SECURITY EDUCATION, VIGILANCE TO CURB ATTACKS ON SCHOOLS
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, has called for greater security education, collective responsibility and vigilance to prevent violent attacks on schools across the country.
The State Commandant, Mr Adedotun Keshinro, made the call at the Lagos State Command’s 7th Public Relations (PR) Clinic.
The quarterly PR Clinic, organised by the Command’s Public Relations Unit (PRU), serves as a platform for public engagement aimed at strengthening the Corps’ image, promoting public awareness and improving crisis communication management.
The initiative aligns with the vision of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof Ahmed Audi, to position the Corps among the leading security agencies in Africa and globally.
Deputy Commandant of Corps (DCC) Jimoh Sulaiman representing the Commandant, delivered the keynote address, reaffirming the NSCDC’s commitment to protecting schools, pupils, teachers, educational infrastructure and host communities.
Speaking on the theme, “Security and Safety of Schools in Lagos: The Roles of Government, NSCDC and Stakeholders,” Sulaiman stressed the importance of security education in safeguarding schools against violent extremism, abductions and other security threats.
He urged all stakeholders to embrace collective responsibility, vigilance and professionalism to end the attacks and tragic experiences suffered by schoolchildren in affected parts of the country.
The event featured presentations by Prof Waziri Adisa of the Department of Sociology, University of Lagos, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Safety Signatures Ltd, Dr Cynthia Gregg.
The Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Akintoye Hassan, served as the lead discussant.
Prof Adisa advocated a whole-of-society approach to ensuring the safety of schools, particularly in Lagos State.
He noted that secure schools guarantee uninterrupted learning, build public confidence, promote social stability and contribute to national development.
Dr Gregg called for a safer and more secure learning environment for schoolchildren across Lagos to sustain educational growth.
While commending the proactive efforts of the NSCDC Lagos Command in protecting schools, she advocated stronger inter-agency collaboration, continuous training and enhanced capacity building to improve security operations.
Hassan also called for a renewed approach to school security, praising the innovative initiatives of the NSCDC Lagos Command.
He urged stronger collaboration among government agencies, security organisations, school authorities and communities to eliminate attacks on schools, educational assets, pupils and host communities.
The event concluded with a summary by the moderator, Mr Dipo Kehinde, following a technical panel session that featured Dr Gregg, the Public Education Officer of the FRSC Lagos Sector Command, Elizabeth Jayeola; the Commander of the Special Female Squad, NSCDC Lagos State Command, Ada Agada; and a Basic Six pupil of Anuoluwapo Primary School, Miss Kolurejo Best.
Since its inauguration in June 2024, the NSCDC Lagos Public Relations Clinic has continued to educate and build the capacity of NSCDC personnel, other security agencies and members of the public on issues relating to the Corps’ mandate, emerging security challenges, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the Code of Conduct, policy directives and relevant laws.
