OBA OF IJESALAND WARNS AGAINST LAND GRABBING, URGES POLICE NEUTRALITY IN DISPUTES
Land Grabbing Tension: Ijesaland Monarch Urges Police to Stay Neutral in Ongoing Disputes
The Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, has issued a strong warning against land grabbing in Ilesa and its surrounding areas, calling on law enforcement authorities to remain neutral in all land-related disputes.
The respected traditional ruler gave the warning during a courtesy visit by the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, to his palace in Ilesa.
Oba Haastrup expressed concern over growing reports of individuals using influence and connections to illegally claim public land. He urged the police not to take sides, especially while legal cases are still pending in court.
“Ilesa is known for peace,” the monarch said. “But recently, the city was on the verge of chaos due to a land dispute involving the Leventis Foundation and a private individual. It took swift action from the palace to prevent violence.”
He noted that cases of land misconduct had surged during the final years of his predecessor’s reign, partly due to declining health. He accused some individuals of exploiting that period to seize government lands through questionable means.
“These people often boast of backing from top law enforcement officials, which emboldens them to act unlawfully. But I want to make it clear—I strongly condemn such criminal behavior that undermines community interests,” Oba Haastrup said.
He urged the police hierarchy to demonstrate fairness, transparency, and integrity when handling land disputes.
“The police must not only act impartially—they must also be seen to do so by all,” he added.
The monarch also called for the establishment of more police divisions, particularly in Oriade Local Government Area, citing population growth and insufficient security coverage in the area.
In response, CP Ibrahim Gotan reassured the royal father of the command’s commitment to peace and justice. He clarified that the police had no involvement in the controversial Leventis Foundation land case.
“I never gave any directive to either party involved in the dispute. I’ve had no contact with them,” Gotan stated.
The commissioner praised the monarch’s timely intervention, emphasizing the crucial role of traditional institutions in maintaining peace and resolving conflicts at the grassroots level.
