OBI, MOMODU CONDEMN EL-RUFAI’S PROLONGED DETENTION
Peter Obi and Dele Momodu have renewed calls for due process in the case of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who has remained in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission since February.
Obi’s media aide, Idris Zekeri, said the former Anambra State governor had repeatedly called for El-Rufai’s case to be handled through the courts. He argued that any allegations against the former governor should be established through due process rather than prolonged detention.
El-Rufai is being held amid investigations and separate court proceedings. The ICPC has maintained that his detention is backed by court orders and has said it is following the legal process.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has reserved ruling on El-Rufai’s no-case submission in a case involving the alleged unlawful interception of telephone communications involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. The ruling is scheduled for October 26.
His separate fundamental rights suit against the ICPC, the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation has also been adjourned to October 27.
Momodu, an African Democratic Congress chieftain, also criticised El-Rufai’s continued detention during an interview on Channels Television. He said the former governor’s political contributions should be considered while his legal matters are addressed through the appropriate channels.
The calls come as El-Rufai’s legal proceedings continue before the courts.
