The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to investing in adult and non-formal education as part of efforts to eradicate illiteracy across communities in the state.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, made this known in Abeokuta during a one-day capacity-building workshop held on Wednesday.

The event, themed “Empowering Adult Educators: Harnessing Digital Technology for Adults and Non-Formal Education”, was organised by the Agency for Mass Education to equip adult and non-formal education personnel with modern skills.

Declaring the workshop open, Arigbabu noted that the present administration places mass literacy at the core of its education agenda, stressing that its policies remain unmatched in the drive to reduce illiteracy and boost the socio-economic standing of the state.

He explained that the training was designed to help staff improve their capacity and keep abreast of evolving trends that would enhance their efficiency.

According to him, the Abiodun-led administration has shown consistent interest in strengthening adult education by ensuring regular payment of honoraria, steady funding for supervision and monitoring of literacy centres, as well as the establishment of additional centres.

“We have touched every aspect of the education sector, including the Agency for Mass Education. Mass literacy, adult, and non-formal education remain central to our policy, and we will continue to prioritise the eradication of illiteracy in Ogun State,” Arigbabu said.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, represented by the Director of Education Support Services, Mrs. Mary Okereafor, encouraged participants to engage actively during the workshop by asking questions, sharing ideas, and embracing collaboration and innovation.

Earlier in her welcome address, Mrs. Abosede Odulesi, Director of Education at the Agency for Mass Education, explained that the workshop would focus on exploring practical tools and digital technologies that can make adult learning more effective and inclusive.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
