OGUN HIGH COURT STOPS PLANNED DEMOLITION OF EX-GOVERNOR DANIEL’S RESIDENCE AND HOTELS

An Ogun State High Court has issued an ex parte order preventing Governor Dapo Abiodun and other state officials from demolishing or interfering with the Asoludero Court— the private Sagamu GRA residence of former governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel.

The court's order also extends to the Conference Hotels Limited and its annex, all owned by the former governor.

Justice O.S. Oloyede granted the interim injunction following an ex parte motion filed by Daniel and his wife, Yeye Olufunke Daniel. The suit was brought through their counsel, A.M. Kotoye, SAN, against Governor Abiodun, the Ogun State Attorney General, the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority, and the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.

According to the certified true copy of the order, signed by Principal Registrar W.T. Ogundele, Kotoye had requested that the court restrain the defendants and their agents from taking any actions—demolition or otherwise—against the Asoludero Court, the Conference Hotels, and its annex, until the motion on notice is heard and determined.

In his ruling, Justice Oloyede stated:
"Having reviewed the affidavit in support and the affidavit of urgency, I am convinced that this court must act swiftly to prevent possible harm."

He then issued an interim ex parte order restraining the defendants and any person acting on their behalf—from tampering with the property located at Block 1, Plots 7 and 8 and Block XXXVIII, Plots 1 and 12, within the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Sagamu, now known as Awolowo Avenue. The properties cover about 1.659 hectares and are described in plan No. SA. 160 (OG), linked to Certificate of Occupancy No. 024698 dated April 21, 2005, later replaced by a computerized version (No. LUD3/LR2693) dated January 20, 2010.

The court also restrained the government from enforcing a quit notice dated August 8, 2025, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

The matter was adjourned to August 19, 2025, for hearing on the interlocutory injunction.

This development follows an allegation by Senator Gbenga Daniel over the weekend, accusing Governor Abiodun of ordering the demolition of his residence, hotels, and annex in Sagamu. He claimed the order was served in the form of contravention and quit notices, along with a demolition warning pasted on the properties around 4 p.m. on Friday, August 8.

Daniel condemned the action, calling it politically motivated and rooted in vendetta.

In response, the Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Tpl Tunji Odunlami, stated that the notices were not targeted at any individual. He explained that the government was conducting a general audit of GRAs across the state as part of its urban renewal efforts.

Odunlami urged all property owners served with the notices—including Senator Daniel—to present their relevant documents for verification. He maintained that the audit would also include government-owned GRAs and was not meant to damage anyone’s reputation.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
