The Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Remo, has urged the Federal Government to strengthen security measures across the country while condemning the rising wave of cybercrime among youths.

The call was made in a communiqué issued at the end of the church’s 35th synod held in Ijoku, Sagamu, Ogun State, and signed by the Diocesan Bishop, Rev. Bamidele Ibikunle, alongside other church leaders.

The synod commended President Bola Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun for their contributions to national development, particularly in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and religious tolerance. It also highlighted the potential economic impact of projects such as the Gateway International Airport.

However, the church expressed concern over worsening insecurity, citing kidnapping and banditry in several states, and called for decisive government action to address the threats.

“The Synod raised concerns over the rate of insecurity… There is an urgent need for stronger measures against religiously motivated violence and kidnapping,” the communiqué stated.

The church also urged the government to tackle economic hardship, inflation, and poverty affecting citizens, especially at the grassroots level.

In addition, it called for increased investment in critical sectors such as education and healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved communities, while encouraging stronger collaboration between government and faith-based organisations.

The synod condemned cybercrime, popularly associated with “Yahoo boys and girls,” urging that young people be properly educated and engaged in productive ventures.

It also addressed global concerns, including geopolitical tensions affecting energy supply, and called for peaceful resolutions to conflicts.

The church further advised Nigerians to prioritise their mental and physical health and reduce reliance on foreign medical care, while urging the government to improve infrastructure and provide support to businesses.

The communiqué concluded with prayers for national leaders and a call for renewed commitment to economic reforms, security improvements, and national unity.
