OGUN MOVES AGAINST UNAPPROVED MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATIONS

The Ogun State Government has begun a crackdown on unapproved motorcycle operators’ associations, warning them to stop collecting levies, taxes and other charges from commercial motorcycle riders.

The state government said only three associations, ROMO, AMORAN and ACCOMORAN, are officially recognised and authorised to operate in public parks and on roads across Ogun State.

According to the government, groups including ANACOWA and AKMODE Transport Limited are not authorised by the Ministry of Transportation to conduct commercial motorcycle revenue activities or collect government-related charges.

The government said registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission does not automatically give an association the authority to operate regulated commercial motorcycle services or collect taxes and levies.

It also clarified that a 2023 court judgment cited by some of the affected groups only affirmed the constitutional right to freedom of association and did not grant them permission to collect government revenue or operate commercial motorcycle activities without the necessary approvals.

The state directed all unapproved groups to immediately stop their activities, warning that violations could attract legal action.

Relevant security and enforcement agencies have been directed to implement the order while the government begins public awareness efforts across the state.
