The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the death of 30-year-old Abigail Adebayo, a mother of three, who allegedly took her own life following a disagreement over her intended marriage.

The incident occurred on February 12, 2026, in the Ijebu area of Ogun State.

Reports indicate that Abigail had been in a relationship with her fiancé since September 2025, and the couple was making arrangements to formalize their union. Tensions reportedly arose when the man introduced Abigail to his family. Upon learning that she had three children from a previous relationship, his family allegedly objected to the marriage, a position that was later reinforced by the fiancé. This development reportedly caused Abigail considerable emotional distress.

According to sources, Abigail was later found motionless in her room and rushed to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Circumstantial evidence suggests she ingested a toxic substance.

Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer Babaseyi Oluseyi said Abigail was suspected to have died after ingesting an insecticide.

“On Thursday, 12/02/2026, it was reported that Abigail Adebayo, 30, allegedly ingested Sniper insecticide following a family disagreement over her intended marriage,” Oluseyi stated.
“She was immediately taken to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. Detectives have visited both the scene and the hospital, and photographs were taken. No visible marks of violence were found on the body. Investigation is ongoing.”

The incident has renewed concerns about emotional well-being and mental health, particularly among young adults facing social and economic pressures.

Last year, in March 2025, a 25-year-old man reportedly took his own life in the Dagbolu community of Osun State, citing the rising cost of living and its impact on his mental health. Family members described him as someone who often concealed his struggles while encouraging others.

Mental health professionals stress that seeking support from trusted family members, community leaders, or professional counselors can help those experiencing emotional distress.
