OJUKWU UNIVERSITY MARKS 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State, has commenced a week-long series of events to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
The celebration began on Friday, May 16, 2025, with a press conference held at the Vice Chancellor’s conference hall. During the briefing, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, reflected on the institution’s journey since its establishment in 2000, highlighting its numerous achievements despite ongoing governance-related challenges.
Prof. Omenugha expressed gratitude to the university community, the state’s education advocates, and divine providence for their unwavering support in sustaining the institution.
“I’m proud to be part of this silver jubilee of a university that represents both the present and the future,” she stated. “Today’s press conference serves to announce our 25th anniversary celebrations and our ‘11-15 Conversation’ series.”
She noted that COOU, formerly Anambra State University of Science and Technology, began with just 500 students and 56 staff members (23 academic and 33 non-academic). Today, the university boasts over 23,500 students and a staff strength of 1,582, including 200 professors, marking a remarkable 280% growth.
“Back in 2008, we had 18 departments across 16 faculties. Now, we have expanded to 54 departments and 14 faculties. All our programmes, including Medicine and Nursing, are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC),” she added.
Omenugha emphasized that COOU has adopted international best practices and remains committed to preserving the legacy of its namesake, the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
“We are celebrating excellence, unity, and the legacy of a great man. These achievements stem from the dedication of our staff, the commitment of our students, and our improved infrastructure. We will continue to strive toward greater heights,” she affirmed.
As part of the week-long celebration, the university will honour several distinguished personalities with awards, including Mrs. Nonye Soludo (wife of the state governor), the late Governor Chukwuma Mbadinuju, Chief Maduboko Benson, Mrs. Ada Chukwudozie, Engr. Chidozie Mbanefo, Emma Bishop Okonkwo, and notable alumni of the university.
