OKOWA CELEBRATES OWAMAH, SAYS HARD WORK CAN TAKE ANYONE TO THE TOP
OWA-ALERO, Delta State – Former Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has underscored the transformative power of hard work, honesty, and perseverance in achieving success, regardless of one's background.
Speaking on Friday during a thanksgiving service at St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Owa-Alero, in honour of Professor Hilary Owamah, the newly appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Delta State University, Abraka, Okowa praised Owamah’s journey as an inspiring example of what determination can accomplish.
"I am proud of you," Okowa said. "Your story shows that with focus and hard work, anyone—even from the most humble beginnings—can rise to great heights."
He also commended the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Asagba, for recognizing Owamah’s dedication and entrusting him with a key leadership position at the university. “Prof. Owamah was born after I had already qualified as a medical doctor. Today, he stands as a professor and now Deputy Vice Chancellor. That makes me proud,” he added.
Prof. Asagba, in his remarks, described Owamah as an exceptionally driven academic. “The role of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) is the operational core of the university, and Prof. Owamah’s energy and work ethic make him the perfect fit. I urge everyone to support him,” he said.
The thanksgiving service featured a sermon by Rt. Rev. Godfrey Ekpenisi, Anglican Bishop of Ika Diocese, who described Owamah’s elevation as divine. Citing Luke 12:48, he reminded the congregation that “to whom much is given, much is expected,” and encouraged the new DVC to lead with humility, commitment, and integrity.
In his address, Prof. Owamah reflected on his background, expressing gratitude to God and to those who supported his academic rise. “I come from a very poor home, and I’m thankful to God for helping me through it all,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to Prof. Asagba for the trust placed in him and thanked Senator Okowa, the Obi of Owa Kingdom, HRM Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor II, and other dignitaries for their presence.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Alexander Ogomudia (rtd), Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ejiro Jamani, former DELSU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, Ika North East Council Chairman, Monday Odigwe, former Isoko Development Union President General, Chief Idu Amadhe, and other top government officials.
