OKPEBHOLO REACTS AS GUNMEN KILL YOUTH NEAR UNIBEN GATE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT
Monday Okpebholo has condemned the killing of a young man by suspected gunmen near the main entrance of University of Benin, describing the attack as a disturbing act of violence that threatens public safety in the state.
Essential News reports that the victim was shot dead in broad daylight on Sunday close to the UNIBEN gate in Benin City, an incident that has triggered fear and outrage among residents and students in the area.
In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the governor described the killing as brutal, unacceptable and completely against the values of his administration.
“The brazen and cold-blooded killing on a day regarded as sacred by many is an affront to human dignity, a threat to public safety, and an attack on everything this administration stands for,” the statement read.
“It is completely unacceptable,” he added.
Okpebholo extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, lamenting that another young life had been cut short by violence.
The governor assured Edo residents that the government would not treat the incident lightly, promising that security agencies were already working to track down those responsible for the attack.
According to the statement, the Edo State Police Command has commenced investigations, while other security operatives have intensified efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
“They may run, but they cannot hide forever,” the statement added.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s resolve to tackle cultism and violent crimes across Edo State, especially in areas that have experienced repeated clashes and insecurity.
He noted that security operations had already led to the arrest and prosecution of several suspected cult members in recent months.
The statement further highlighted ongoing collaboration between the state government and security agencies including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Army.
According to the government, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and civil society organisations are also being engaged as part of wider efforts to combat cult-related violence and youth criminality.
The administration added that rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for vulnerable youths remain part of its long-term strategy to reduce cult recruitment and violent behaviour.
Okpebholo said the latest killing was a painful reminder that the fight against insecurity and violent crime is far from over.
He urged residents with useful information about the incident to cooperate with security agencies, assuring them that all information shared would be treated confidentially.
“Edo State will not be a sanctuary for criminals,” the governor declared.
“Those who carry arms and terrorise innocent people will face the full consequences of the law.”
