Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has officially resigned from his position.

In a Facebook post shared on Saturday, Soneye expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their support throughout his 20-month tenure.

“I have stepped aside from my role as Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd. This move will enable me to focus more on my family and attend to pressing personal matters,” he wrote, receiving praise and well wishes from his followers.

Reflecting on his time at the company, Soneye described it as a privilege and said he was proud of his contributions to NNPCL’s transformation journey. He also pledged continued support for the company and urged media professionals to maintain responsible and balanced reporting that aligns with NNPCL’s goals.

“It’s been a great honour to serve both the company and the country. I’m thankful for the trust, opportunities, and the chance to work with outstanding professionals within and beyond the organization,” he stated.

Appointed on October 18, 2023, Soneye succeeded Garba Muhammad, who had taken on the role in August 2021 following a company-wide management shake-up.

Before joining NNPCL, Soneye had an impressive career as an international journalist, with professional experience in Nigeria, the U.S., and Australia. He was previously the Editor of US Air Force One Magazine in Washington, D.C., and also served as President of the Nigerian Media Practitioners in the U.S.

A respected member of multiple professional bodies—including the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Society of Professional Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, and the Guild of Corporate Online Media Publishers—Soneye was named “Spokesperson of the Year” in both 2024 and 2025 by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
