ONDO ASSEMBLY PASSES STATE POLICE BILL
The Ondo State House of Assembly has approved a constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police services in Nigeria.
The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, received the support of all lawmakers present during Monday’s plenary after passing its second and third readings.
The Assembly’s Majority Leader, Olatunji Oshati, moved the motion for its passage, while Allen Oluwatoyin, who represents Ese Odo Constituency, seconded it.
Oshati said lawmakers had carefully considered the proposed amendment and its implications for citizens. He expressed confidence that state police would help address the security challenges facing the country.
The Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, described the proposal as long overdue, saying it would help security agencies respond more quickly to crime and other threats.
The Assembly’s approval signals its support for the proposed constitutional change. The bill seeks to provide a framework for state police services; the vote does not itself announce the launch of a police service in Ondo State.
