ONE KILLED IN ABEOKUTA AS POLICE CONFIRM CULT CLASH, NOT POLITICAL VIOLENCE
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the violent incident that claimed a life in Abeokuta was a cult-related clash and not connected to any political rally or public gathering.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 2:45 pm along Wasimi Ake Road, near the Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank axis leading toward Ijemo Agbadu, in Ogun State.
In a statement, police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi explained that the clash involved suspected rival cult groups who engaged in a gunfight before fleeing the area, causing panic among residents.
The Command clarified that the violence did not take place at Ake Palace and had no link whatsoever to the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration programme, contrary to early speculation circulating in some quarters.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found one victim, identified as “Stone,” lying critically injured with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the State Hospital in Ijaiye, Abeokuta, where he was confirmed dead.
His remains have since been deposited in the hospital morgue for autopsy, while investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Security operatives have intensified patrols in the area to prevent further clashes and restore calm to the community.
The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could help in tracking down the suspects behind the violence.
According to the Command, efforts are underway to ensure all individuals involved in the cult clash are brought to justice.
