OSHIOMHOLE CALLS FOR MTN, DSTV LICENCE WITHDRAWAL OVER XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called on the Federal Government to revoke the operating licences of major South African companies in Nigeria, including MTN and DSTV, following renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Speaking during plenary, Oshiomhole argued that Nigeria must adopt a reciprocal approach in its diplomatic response, insisting that the country should not only express concern but also take firm economic action.

He specifically urged the government to consider nationalising MTN Group operations in Nigeria, alleging that the company repatriates significant revenue while Nigerians continue to face attacks abroad.

The senator also called for the revocation of DSTV’s licence, referring to DStv as part of what he described as unfair economic exploitation of Nigeria.

According to him, such measures would strengthen Nigeria’s bargaining power and send a strong message against continued attacks on its citizens.

Oshiomhole stressed that Nigerians living in South Africa are economically active and contributing to the host country, adding that they should not be subjected to violence or discrimination.

His comments come amid growing concern in the National Assembly over the safety of Nigerians abroad, with lawmakers urging the Federal Government to take stronger diplomatic and protective measures.

Other senators also called for intervention by the African Union, warning that continued attacks could strain relations between the two countries if not addressed urgently.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
