Former Super Eagles striker Benedict Akwuegbu has urged Victor Osimhen to resist the big-money offers coming from Saudi Arabia and instead stay focused on achieving greatness in Europe.

Akwuegbu, who played 35 times for Nigeria and scored 10 goals, now runs his own football club in Nigeria. In a recent interview with Brila FM, the ex-international didn’t mince words in praising Osimhen but cautioned him against leaving Europe too soon.

“Victor Osimhen is still one of the best strikers in the world,” Akwuegbu said. “But I don’t think he should leave Europe right now. He belongs in the top leagues — England, Spain, Italy. That’s where great players shine and build their legacy.”

Osimhen, who had a stunning season on loan at Turkish champions Galatasaray, scoring 37 goals and lifting both the league and domestic cup, is currently back at Napoli. However, his future remains uncertain as clubs like Juventus, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United have all been linked with a move.

“Legacy Over Lucre”

Akwuegbu warned that a move to a less competitive league — even for huge sums of money — could damage Osimhen’s chances of winning major individual awards like the African Footballer of the Year.

“If he moves to a Saudi club just for the money, he can forget about winning titles like African Player of the Year. Those leagues aren’t rated as highly,” he explained. “Money is important, but when you look back at your career, it’s the trophies and recognition that matter more.”

Juventus Move Still on the Table?

While many top European clubs are reportedly circling, transfer expert Alfredo Pedulla says Juventus are still very much in the race — even though a move there wouldn’t be simple.

“With Osimhen, things change quickly,” Pedulla told The Italian Football Podcast. “He rejected a €40 million-a-year offer from Al Hilal. He’s clearly not interested in Saudi Arabia. He wants to compete in Europe.”

Pedulla added that Osimhen’s release clause — €75 million, valid only for foreign clubs between July 1 and 15 — makes him an attractive but expensive target. The striker’s situation could swing either way depending on offers and personal decisions in the coming days.

Galatasaray Dream Still Alive?

Despite being only a loan signing, Galatasaray are reportedly hoping to make Osimhen’s move permanent. However, the Turkish giants may struggle to meet Napoli’s asking price and the player’s wages.

“Galatasaray would love to keep him, but the deal is tough,” said Pedulla. “The Premier League clubs haven’t made real offers yet. Juventus still have hope, but it’s not as clear as before.”

Osimhen’s future remains one of the most watched transfer stories this summer, and it’s clear that both fans and former stars like Akwuegbu want to see the Nigerian striker stay at the top of world football — not just the top of the rich list.
