The Osun State Police Command has arrested Chief Gbenga Ajibade over an alleged attempted murder involving a 25-year-old man accused of stealing maize from his farm.

Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, assuring the public that investigations are underway and justice will be served.

The incident, which took place in the Ireti Ayo area of Ilesa, reportedly saw Chief Ajibade — who is the President of Ijesa Sports Club — forcing the young man, identified as Ebenezer, to drink a poisonous substance after accusing him of stealing two pieces of maize.

Earlier reports had claimed that Ebenezer died from the poisoning, prompting his father to collapse and die from shock upon hearing the false news. However, Ojelabi clarified that Ebenezer survived after being treated and stabilised by doctors at Wesley Guild Hospital.

Following the tragic chain of events, the Ijesa Sports Club suspended Chief Ajibade on August 7, 2025, citing the severity of the allegations.

Police traced and arrested the suspect in his hometown, Ipetu Ijesa, before moving him to Osogbo for further investigation. He remains in custody and will be charged to court once investigations are complete.

Ojelabi urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to allow due legal processes to take their course.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
