OUTRAGE AS NYSC LAGOS ALLEGEDLY INTIMIDATES CORPS MEMBER FOR CRITICIZING PRESIDENT AMID ECONOMIC HARDSHIP
Lagos, Nigeria – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Lagos Secretariat is under fire for allegedly threatening a female corps member who voiced her frustration over the worsening cost of living in the country. The corps member, struggling with rising inflation, rent hikes, and the daily challenge of survival, was reportedly reduced to tears while expressing her distress.
Rather than offering support, the NYSC allegedly attempted to silence her after she criticized President Bola Tinubu’s handling of the economy. Her only alleged offense was calling the President “terrible at his job” – a statement that, in a democratic society, falls within her right to free speech.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians accusing the NYSC of acting as an oppressive tool rather than an institution committed to the welfare of corps members. Critics argue that instead of threats, the corps member deserved reassurance and empathy, especially given the growing concerns over mental health struggles amid economic hardship.
“The right to free speech is fundamental in a democracy,” said a concerned activist. “The NYSC should be protecting corps members, not intimidating them for expressing their opinions.”
Many are now calling on the NYSC to discipline those responsible at its Lagos Secretariat and issue a formal apology to the corps member. They urge the organization to reaffirm its commitment to the well-being of corps members, rather than appearing to suppress dissenting voices.
With Nigeria facing economic turmoil, young citizens should not be silenced for speaking out. The NYSC’s response to this controversy will be a crucial test of its stance on democracy and freedom of expression.
