OUTRAGE SPARKS ACROSS NIGERIA AFTER VIRAL VIDEO SHOWS ELDERLY MAN FORCED INTO COFFIN
A disturbing video circulating online has sparked outrage after showing an elderly man forced into a coffin alongside a corpse in Cross River State. The incident, which reportedly occurred in Bekwarra Local Government Area, has prompted an urgent investigation by local authorities.
The viral footage, shared on November 19, 2025, shows a group of youths assaulting the elderly man while speaking the Bekwarra language. The mob accused him of witchcraft and claimed he was responsible for the death of the person in the casket. They then forcibly pushed him into the coffin, threatening to bury him alive unless he confessed.
The shocking clip has drawn condemnation nationwide, with many calling it an act of jungle justice and a violation of human rights.
Reacting to the video, the Acting Chairman of Bekwarra LGA, Hon. Egbung Odama Egbung, said he immediately contacted all local security heads for verification. However, preliminary investigations have not been able to pinpoint the specific community, ward, or village where the incident took place.
To fast-track identification, the Chairman directed Ward Relations Officers to work closely with clan heads, chiefs, and youth leaders to uncover the identities of both the victim and the perpetrators.
He noted that, so far, no one has come forward with concrete information, and the location remains unconfirmed. The public is therefore being urged to speak up if they have firsthand knowledge of the incident.
Security agencies have also begun tracing the source of the viral clip. Some online accounts that first shared the video have reportedly been documented for questioning regarding its origin and authenticity.
Authorities are calling for calm and are encouraging residents to report suspicious activities or useful information to their ward officers or the Divisional Police Headquarters in Abuochiche.
The investigation continues as Nigerians express shock and demand justice for the victim of the brutal act.
