OYE IBIDAPO-OBE VARSITY TO DRIVE INNOVATION, INDUSTRIAL GROWTH — WIDOW

The widow of late renowned scholar and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, has expressed confidence that the newly proposed Oye Ibidapo-Obe University will serve as a catalyst for innovation and industrial growth in Nigeria.

Mrs. Ibidapo-Obe made the declaration during a memorial lecture and stakeholders’ forum held in honour of her late husband on Friday. 

She described the institution, which is being established to immortalise the distinguished academic’s legacy, as a strategic response to Nigeria’s need for a world-class research-driven university focused on science, technology, and entrepreneurship.

“Professor Ibidapo-Obe was passionate about translating knowledge into practical solutions for national development. This university will not be just another tertiary institution; it will drive cutting-edge innovation, foster industry-academia collaboration, and produce graduates equipped to solve real industrial challenges,” she stated.

The proposed university aims to specialise in engineering, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, agricultural technology, and advanced manufacturing. Plans include state-of-the-art research centres, innovation hubs, and strong partnerships with local and international industries to bridge the skills gap in Nigeria’s economy.

The late Professor Ibidapo-Obe, a distinguished engineer and former President of the Nigerian Academy of Science, was celebrated for his contributions to university administration, research excellence, and human capital development. Speakers at the event highlighted his vision for a knowledge-based economy and how the new institution will carry forward that dream.

Lagos State officials and education stakeholders who attended the forum pledged support for the project. The state government described it as a welcome addition to efforts aimed at expanding access to quality higher education and boosting technological advancement.

Mrs. Ibidapo-Obe called on the private sector, philanthropists, and government agencies to rally behind the initiative. “This is a legacy project that will benefit generations. We must work together to make it a centre of excellence that Nigeria and Africa can be proud of,” she added.

The foundation stone laying and further details on admission timelines are expected to be announced in the coming months as planning reaches advanced stages.
