OYO ABDUCTIONS: REPS DECRY MATH TEACHER’S DEATH, SEEK STATE POLICE
The House of Representatives on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to urgently implement state police as part of efforts to address worsening insecurity and rising cases of abductions across the country.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Ayodeji Alao-Akala, the lawmaker representing Ogbomosho North/Ogbomosho South/Orire Federal Constituency of Oyo State.
Presenting the motion, Alao-Akala condemned the continued attacks on communities in Ogbomosho and Orire Local Government Areas, especially the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers from schools in the area.
He recalled that armed bandits attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School in Esiele, and LEA Primary School on May 16, 2025, abducting more than 30 pupils and teachers.
“The terrified parents could only watch and weep,” he said.
The lawmaker also condemned the killing of Mathematics teacher Michael Oyedokun, who was reportedly beheaded while in captivity.
“The House is deeply disturbed by the barbaric execution of Mr Michael Oyedokun,” he stated, describing the incident as a shocking act demanding immediate government action.
Alao-Akala warned that the Old Oyo National Park and surrounding forests have become safe havens for criminal groups because of the difficult terrain and links to interstate and international routes.
“We are alarmed that the Old Oyo National Park and its surrounding forests are a vast, ungoverned wilderness,” he said.
He argued that the country can no longer delay the decentralisation of the security system, stressing that communities remain vulnerable without state policing.
“We no longer want sympathy after the fact. We want to stop burying our children,” he added.
Supporting the motion, Bamidele Salam, representing Ede North/Ede South/Ejigbo/Egbedore Federal Constituency of Osun State, said attacks on schools have become a dangerous trend since the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.
“One of the keys to liberating a people is education, and if that key is in the hands of killers, then there is a problem,” Salam said.
He urged the Federal Government to create a special security force dedicated to protecting schools nationwide.
Also contributing, Benedict Etanabene, representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency of Delta State, said insecurity had become a national crisis that requires practical action rather than political arguments.
“We cannot keep procrastinating over state policing. It is not good to keep politicising insecurity,” he said.
Following the debate, the House called on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of all abducted students and teachers still in captivity.
Lawmakers also urged the establishment of a permanent Forward Operating Base in Orire Local Government Area to strengthen security operations around the Old Oyo National Park and neighbouring communities.
The House further asked both the Executive and Legislative arms of government to ensure the implementation of previous resolutions aimed at decentralising Nigeria’s policing structure and improving security nationwide.
