OYO SETS UP TECHNICAL TEAM TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE-RELATED HEALTH RISKS

The Oyo State Government has inaugurated a technical group to develop coordinated measures for addressing the growing impact of climate change on public health and the environment.

The initiative is part of the state’s broader climate action efforts, as authorities seek to strengthen its response to challenges such as rising temperatures, flooding, changing rainfall patterns, food insecurity and other consequences of climate change.

The technical group is expected to bring together relevant stakeholders and professionals to examine the health implications of climate-related events and develop practical strategies for reducing their impact on residents.

Climate change has increasingly become a concern for Oyo State, with irregular rainfall, extreme heat and flooding capable of affecting livelihoods, infrastructure and public health. The state government has therefore been working to incorporate climate considerations into sectors including health, agriculture, infrastructure and environmental management.

The development comes after the state established the Oyo State Council on Climate Change, a 20-member body chaired by Governor Seyi Makinde. The council includes representatives from government ministries, the private sector, civil society organisations and academia and is responsible for coordinating climate-related policies and interventions.

The government has identified health as one of the areas requiring greater attention as climate conditions change. Extreme heat, air pollution, flooding and poor waste management can create additional health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The state's Climate Action Plan for 2026–2040 also identifies health-related consequences of climate change and outlines measures including early-warning systems, improved flood management, climate-smart agriculture and strategies for addressing the health effects of heatwaves and pollution.

The technical group is expected to support the implementation of these measures by providing technical expertise and helping government agencies coordinate their responses.

The initiative forms part of Oyo State’s wider effort to move beyond climate policy formulation towards practical action that can improve environmental resilience and protect the wellbeing of residents.

With climate-related challenges becoming increasingly visible, the state government is seeking stronger collaboration among health professionals, environmental experts, government agencies and other stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions.
