Oyo Hikes Traffic Fines: Motorists, Cyclists to Pay up to ₦200,000 for Offences

Motorists and cyclists in Oyo State may want to be extra cautious on the road, as the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) has rolled out stiffer penalties for traffic offences, with fines now ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦200,000.

The Chairman of OYTMA, Rtr. Major Adekoya Adesagba (Rtd.), made this known during a recent meeting with zonal commanders at the agency’s headquarters in Ibadan. He clarified that the increment in traffic fines is not a ploy to boost government revenue, but a strategic move aimed at instilling greater discipline among road users and ensuring public safety.

According to Adesagba, the revised penalties target both first-time and repeat offenders and are designed to deter reckless behavior that puts lives and property at risk. “We are not doing this to make money,” he said. “Our goal is to protect lives and promote a culture of responsibility and safety on our roads.”

Here’s a breakdown of some of the new fines:

Unlicensed Motorcycles or Tricycles: Driving an unlicensed motorcycle or tricycle will now attract a fine of ₦25,000.

Unpainted Commercial Bikes/Tricycles: Commercial riders who fail to use the government-approved colour scheme will be fined ₦20,000 for a first offence and ₦30,000 for subsequent violations.

Driving in Prohibited Directions (One-way Driving): This dangerous offence will now cost drivers ₦100,000 for a first violation and a hefty ₦200,000 if caught again.

Illegal Parking: Failure to park in designated motor parks will attract a fine of ₦20,000 for the first offence and ₦30,000 for repeat offences.

The OYTMA boss emphasized that these measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure smooth traffic flow across Oyo State and reduce the high rate of accidents often caused by non-compliance with traffic rules.

Adesagba also warned his officers against corrupt practices. He stated in clear terms that any personnel caught extorting money from motorists or behaving unprofessionally while on duty would face serious sanctions. “We are leading by example,” he noted. “There will be zero tolerance for corruption within the agency.”

As Oyo State tightens its grip on traffic enforcement, the message is clear: follow the rules or pay the price. Road users are advised to take note of the updated penalties and adjust their driving habits accordingly.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
