EPL: Scholes Unsure If Arteta Really Wanted Viktor Gyokeres as Arsenal’s Top Striker

Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes has cast doubt over Arsenal’s summer signing of Viktor Gyokeres, suggesting that manager Mikel Arteta might not have made him his first-choice target.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes questioned whether the Swedish striker, who recently joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon in a £64 million deal, truly fits into Arteta’s tactical plans.

“Centre forward — I just wonder if you’ve chosen the right one,” Scholes said.
“There was a lot of um-ing and ah-ing about it. I wonder if Mikel Arteta really wanted him as the main one. I’m not too sure.”

Gyokeres arrives at the Emirates with an impressive record, having scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting. He’s also set to wear the iconic No. 14 shirt, once famously worn by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

Despite his goal-scoring form in Portugal, some fans and pundits remain curious to see how well Gyokeres will adapt to the Premier League’s intensity and Arteta’s system — especially when Arsenal were previously linked to other big-name strikers.

Arteta is yet to publicly comment on Scholes’ remarks, but all eyes will be on how Gyokeres performs as Arsenal push for the Premier League title this season.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
