PDP LEADERS RALLY FOR UNITY AS GOVERNORS MEET IN ZAMFARA AHEAD OF 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is stepping up efforts to heal internal rifts and build a stronger front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite months of visible cracks and divisions, party leaders, governors, and national executives are gathering in Zamfara to push for reconciliation, enforce discipline, and map out strategies to reclaim power from the ruling party.

The meeting, hosted by Governor Dauda Lawal in Gusau, Zamfara State, is expected to set the tone for the party’s upcoming national convention. According to insiders, discussions will focus on bridging factional divides, harmonising interests, and designing a clear plan to strengthen the PDP’s chances in 2027.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, led some governors to Zamfara for the talks. Party sources revealed that the zoning committee, headed by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, has recommended that the 2027 presidential ticket should reflect “the mood of the nation,” — pointing strongly towards a southern candidate.

At the same time, pressure is mounting on former President Goodluck Jonathan to consider joining the race.

However, cracks remain, particularly between loyalists of PDP governors and those aligned with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike. Wike’s camp has openly rejected the outcome of a recent southern leaders’ zoning consultative meeting in Lagos.

Veteran party leader, Chief Bode George, has warned that the PDP must act firmly against members undermining its unity. Speaking in an interview, he insisted that discipline and loyalty are non-negotiable if the party wants to remain Nigeria’s main opposition force.

“In life, there are progress accelerators and progress terminators. If you want to be a terminator, please ship yourself out,” George said, stressing that the party is bigger than any individual’s ambition.

He also reminded members that rotational leadership remains central to the PDP’s founding principles, arguing that every geopolitical zone deserves a sense of belonging.

The Zamfara gathering comes as the PDP prepares for its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, slated for November 15–16, 2025.

Party leaders say the event will be crucial for strengthening internal cohesion and setting a clear direction ahead of the 2027 elections.

For now, the message from Zamfara is clear: unity and discipline will decide whether the PDP can bounce back as a credible alternative for Nigerians.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
