Abuja, Nigeria — The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a major step in its preparations for the 2027 presidential election by setting up a zoning panel to determine which region will produce the party’s next presidential candidate.

Party leaders say the move is part of a broader strategy to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and reclaim the presidency. The zoning panel will review political realities, past election trends, and regional power balances before making a recommendation on where the party’s ticket should come from.

In addressing growing speculation, the PDP made it clear that former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are not in the running under the PDP platform. Party insiders stressed that the focus now is on fresh political strategies and building a united front, rather than revisiting old candidacies.

According to sources within the party, the zoning decision will be guided by fairness, internal unity, and the need to present a strong candidate capable of appealing to voters across Nigeria’s diverse regions.

With the election still two years away, the PDP is already intensifying consultations with stakeholders, grassroots supporters, and political heavyweights to strengthen its campaign machinery. The party hopes that an early and clear strategy will give it an advantage over the APC and other contenders when the 2027 race begins in full swing.

For many observers, the PDP’s latest move signals that the battle for 2027 is already heating up — and the fight for Nigeria’s top seat will be anything but dull.
