PEP GUARDIOLA ADMITS TO TOUGHEST SEASON OF CAREER AS CITY’S TITLE HOPES FADE

Manchester, England — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that the 2024–25 season has been the most testing of his storied 16-year managerial career, as his side’s pursuit of a fifth consecutive Premier League title fell apart and their Champions League campaign ended prematurely.

Despite still being in contention for the FA Cup and Club World Cup, and with a top-five finish still achievable, Guardiola offered a blunt assessment of the year, citing a range of physical and emotional challenges that took a toll on both him and his players.

“This season has definitely been the hardest,” the 54-year-old said. “The emotional strain, the preparation, the mood — everything is more demanding when the wins aren’t coming.”

City’s dip in form began in late October and was compounded by a string of injuries, including a significant one to influential midfielder Rodri. Guardiola openly shouldered the blame for not being able to stabilize the squad or maintain their usually high standards.

“We lacked energy and consistency. I couldn’t find a way to make the team feel comfortable or get back to winning regularly,” he admitted. “That’s on me.”

Guardiola’s men exited the Champions League in the knockout playoff round after being eliminated by Real Madrid, a blow that effectively ended hopes of replicating last season’s treble-winning success. Still, he remained focused on the positives.

“We didn’t give up,” he emphasized. “We’re still fighting for a Champions League spot — and that, in itself, is a huge reward. We also have the FA Cup and Club World Cup ahead. So, it’s not over.”

Looking ahead, City will travel to face relegated Southampton this weekend, aiming to end the campaign on a strong note and salvage pride with potential silverware still in sight.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
