PEP GUARDIOLA: CATALAN GENIUS WHO CHANGED FOOTBALL
Pep Guardiola will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing to a close a decade that transformed the club into one of the dominant forces in world football.
The club announced on Friday that Guardiola would depart after the final game of the campaign, one year before the expiration of his contract.
The 55-year-old arrived in England in 2016 following successful managerial spells with FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, already regarded as one of the most sought-after coaches in the game.
During his 10 years at Manchester City, Guardiola won 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a historic four consecutive league crowns between 2021 and 2024.
His crowning achievement came in 2023 when City secured their first UEFA Champions League title, completing a treble of the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, matching the feat achieved by Manchester United in 1999.
Beyond silverware, Guardiola leaves a lasting impact on English football through his possession-based style, emphasis on building from the back, and tactical innovations that have influenced clubs across all levels of the game.
His rivalry with Jürgen Klopp and Klopp's Liverpool FC produced some of the most memorable title races in Premier League history, pushing both teams to extraordinary standards.
Guardiola's influence has also extended to a new generation of coaches. Among those who worked under him are Mikel Arteta, Enzo Maresca, and Vincent Kompany, all of whom have gone on to managerial success.
Off the pitch, Guardiola has been outspoken on political and humanitarian issues, including support for Catalan independence and advocacy regarding the conflict in Gaza.
The City boss departs while the club still awaits a verdict on more than 100 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations, allegations the club denies and which Guardiola has consistently defended the club against.
Despite finishing behind Arsenal FC in this season's title race, Guardiola leaves Manchester City as one of the most successful and influential managers in football history.
Often citing the late Johan Cruyff as his greatest inspiration, Guardiola may resist comparisons with his mentor, but his achievements have secured his place among football's all-time coaching greats.
