PETER OBI CALLS FOR BETTER FACILITIES AT SOKOTO IDP CAMP

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called on the government to improve living conditions for internally displaced persons at the Ramin Kura IDP Camp in Sokoto State.

Obi made the call after visiting the camp in Sokoto North Local Government Area on September 29 during a two-day visit to the state.

In a statement shared on his X account, Obi said more than 1,000 displaced people were living at the camp under difficult conditions.

He expressed concern over the makeshift shelters and thatched rooms where displaced families live, noting that some rooms accommodate as many as 10 people.

Obi also identified inadequate toilet facilities, the absence of a primary healthcare centre and the lack of a basic school for children as some of the challenges facing the camp.

He urged the government and relevant agencies to urgently provide better facilities and support for the displaced residents while addressing the security challenges that forced them from their communities.

Obi said temporary accommodation for displaced Nigerians should be made more suitable while efforts are intensified to create the security conditions needed for them to return home.

The former presidential candidate said the visit was his 12th to an IDP camp in Nigeria and pledged to continue supporting displaced Nigerians.

He also urged political office holders to spend their holidays within Nigeria to gain a better understanding of the challenges facing vulnerable citizens.

Obi attributed the conditions in the camp to what he described as insufficient government attention to critical development needs and renewed his call for improved support for displaced Nigerians.
