PETER OBI CONDEMNS NON-PAYMENT OF SUPER EAGLES’ MATCH ALLOWANCES
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the failure to pay Super Eagles players their match allowances, describing the situation as embarrassing and unnecessary.
In a statement shared on his verified X handle on Wednesday, Obi said the national team does not deserve such distractions, especially ahead of a crucial quarter-final fixture.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that Nigeria must learn to honour its commitments, particularly to those representing the country on the global stage.
“When will this embarrassment end? Can we go a single day without disturbing news?” Obi asked.
“At a time when Nigerians desperately need joy and unity—something the Super Eagles have consistently provided through their victories and performances worldwide—it is unacceptable that these players are being denied their basic match allowances.
“It is troubling that a country capable of writing off trillions of naira in debts for government agencies and political allies, and spending lavishly on self-serving projects, now struggles to pay the bonuses owed to its national players.
“Nigeria deserves a far better international image than this continued failure to honour agreed allowances before a major tournament,” he said.
