Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reportedly demanded ₦5 billion in damages and a public apology from political commentator and actor, Kenneth Okonkwo, over alleged defamatory statements.

The demand follows comments attributed to Okonkwo that Obi’s camp considers false and damaging to his public image and political reputation.

According to Obi’s legal team, the statements allegedly made by Okonkwo were capable of misleading the public and tarnishing the former Anambra State governor’s integrity.

They are insisting on a retraction of the comments and a public apology, in addition to the financial compensation sought as damages.

Obi’s camp maintains that the allegations are unfounded and have caused unnecessary political tension and reputational harm.

Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign council, is yet to publicly respond to the latest demand at the time of filing this report.

The development highlights ongoing internal disagreements and legal tensions among key figures within Nigeria’s political space following the 2023 elections and shifting alliances.

Observers say the situation could escalate into a legal battle if both parties fail to reach an amicable resolution in the coming days.
