PETER OBI SLAMS PROPOSED PAY RISE FOR POLITICIANS, CALLS IT ‘GREEDY AND INSENSITIVE’
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticised the reported proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase salaries of political office holders in Nigeria.
Reacting in a post on his official X handle, Obi described the idea as an “act of greed and insensitivity,” especially at a time when millions of Nigerians are battling harsh economic realities.
He questioned the necessity and timing of such a move, pointing out that while the living standards of ordinary citizens continue to fall, leaders appear more concerned about enriching themselves.
“The RMAFC’s reckless haste in prioritising the greed of politicians over the desperate needs of the masses is not only provocative but scandalous,” Obi said.
He argued that political office should be about service to the nation, not an avenue to amass wealth, warning that the proposed pay rise exposes a growing disconnect between leaders and the people.
Obi also noted that it was unfair for politicians to be considered for over 100% salary increases while essential workers like police officers, who are underpaid and overworked, continue to be neglected.
He urged RMAFC to shift focus towards improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, especially public servants who play crucial roles in the country’s development but remain undercompensated
.
For Obi, the proposal is more than just bad timing—it is a betrayal of the struggling majority who deserve leaders willing to sacrifice, not indulge in excess.
