PIND, COLDHUBS LAUNCH SOLAR-POWERED COLD HUB TO REDUCE POST-HARVEST LOSSES

The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) and ColdHubs have unveiled a new solar-powered cold storage facility aimed at preserving farm produce and reducing post-harvest losses for smallholder farmers in the region.

The innovative cold hub, which operates entirely on renewable energy, provides affordable storage solutions for perishable goods such as vegetables, fruits, and seafood. Farmers can now store their produce for longer periods, access better market prices, and minimise waste that previously plagued the agricultural value chain.

Officials from both organisations described the project as a game-changer for food security and rural livelihoods. The facility is expected to benefit hundreds of farmers by improving income stability and encouraging increased production.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture and sustainable development in the Niger Delta. It also demonstrates the potential of renewable energy solutions in addressing infrastructural deficits in rural communities.

Stakeholders urged other organisations and government agencies to support similar projects across agricultural zones. The solar cold hub is seen as a model that can be replicated nationwide to strengthen the fight against food insecurity.
