POLICE ANNOUNCE MOVEMENT RESTRICTION FOR EDO LG ON SATURDAY
The Edo State Police Command has announced a restriction on movement across the state on Saturday during the local government elections to ensure a peaceful and orderly process.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Okon Abang, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing in Benin City. He said the restriction will be in force from 6am to 6pm to allow voters to exercise their franchise without hindrance and to enable security agencies to maintain law and order.
“Movement will be restricted from 6am to 6pm on Saturday. Only accredited election officials, observers, and essential service providers will be allowed to move during this period. We urge the public to comply with this directive,” Abang stated.
The police chief assured residents that adequate security personnel have been deployed to all polling units and collation centres to prevent any form of violence or electoral malpractices. He warned that any attempt to disrupt the electoral process will be met with swift and decisive action.
The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has also appealed to voters to come out early and cast their votes peacefully. The commission assured the public that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure the smooth conduct of the election.
Political parties and candidates have been urged to instruct their supporters to avoid any provocative actions and respect the movement restriction. The police have also warned against the illegal possession of firearms and other dangerous weapons during the election period.
Residents have been advised to stock up on essential items before the restriction begins and to remain in their homes during the voting period for their safety. The police command has set up a control room to monitor the situation and respond promptly to any security breach.
The local government elections in Edo State are expected to be a test of the state’s security preparedness and the commitment of all stakeholders to a peaceful democratic process.
