The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media activist, Akaninyene Udo, for allegedly spreading false and provocative security messages capable of causing panic among residents.

The suspect, identified as a resident of Akpautong in Esit Eket Local Government Area, reportedly operates on social media under the name “AK Philo.”

According to the police, he was arrested following investigations into a viral post titled “Eket get ready for us,” which was accompanied by an image of an armed bandit.

The Command said the post triggered fear and widespread concern among residents of Eket and surrounding communities.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, assured residents that the security situation in Akwa Ibom remains calm and under control.

“The Command wishes to assure the good people of Akwa Ibom State that there is no cause for alarm. The security situation across the state remains calm, stable, and under control,” the statement read.

The police added that investigations into the matter have been concluded and that the suspect will soon be charged to court.

The Command also revealed that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals involved in spreading false and inciting security-related content online.

The police warned residents against creating or sharing unverified security alerts and fake news, noting that such actions are criminal offences punishable under the law.

Residents were advised to verify security information through official channels before circulating such reports on social media.
