The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested one Lawal Nasiru, 28, for allegedly assaulting and unlawfully confining an 11-year-old Almajiri pupil in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.

Police spokesperson, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.

According to the command, the case occurred on September 21, 2025, when Nasiru, of Unguwar Jarmai, allegedly tied the boy, Sani Abdullahi, with a heavy rope and flogged him with a thick cable and stick.

The pupil, attached to a Tsangaya (Qur’anic) school, sustained serious injuries on his hands and legs.

The matter was reported the following day to the Divisional Police Headquarters, Darazo, by Idris Mohammed, an official of the Social Welfare Department in the area.

Upon receiving the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, SP Auwalu Ilu, led a team of officers to the scene, where the suspect was promptly arrested.

The injured child was rushed to the General Hospital, Darazo, for medical treatment.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to tying the minor, claiming it was to stop him from fleeing the Tsangaya school before his parents’ arrival. However, the victim insisted he was mercilessly confined without justification.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bauchi, for further investigation.

Police authorities assured that the suspect will be profiled and prosecuted in court once investigations are concluded.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
