Kaduna Police Stop Peter Obi Supporters’ Rally, Cite Security Threats and Political Tensions

The Kaduna State Police Command has stopped a planned rally by supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, citing security concerns and political tensions in the state.

The rally, which was scheduled to coincide with Obi’s birthday celebration, was called off after the police warned that it could be hijacked by criminal elements aiming to incite violence and disturb public peace.

According to a statement from the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, intelligence reports indicated that some individuals were planning to use the rally as a cover to cause disruption in Kaduna.

“All political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended in Kaduna State until the official campaign season begins, as set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” the statement read.

The police further explained that the rally clashed with the schedule of party primaries taking place in various parts of the state. They expressed concern that overlapping events could lead to clashes between rival political groups and create a breakdown of law and order.

“The safety of lives and property remains our top priority. We advise all groups to respect the directive and avoid actions that could lead to violence,” the statement added.

The police also stated they would take legal action against any group or individual who defies the ban.

Organisers of the rally have been urged to suspend all plans for the procession to avoid any escalation and to help maintain peace in the state.

This development comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, as supporters

of various political figures begin to mobilise. However, authorities are calling for calm and strict adherence to electoral timelines to prevent chaos.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
