POLICE IG REINFORCES 24/7 COMPLAINT UNIT TO CURB MISCONDUCT AND BOOST ACCOUNTABILITY

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has reaffirmed the role of the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) as a key channel for strengthening accountability, transparency, and trust between the public and the security agency.

The directive reinforces the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ongoing reforms aimed at improving professionalism and addressing misconduct within its ranks.

According to the IGP, the CRU will remain fully operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, giving citizens uninterrupted access to report cases involving abuse of office, extortion, human rights violations, and other forms of unethical behaviour by police officers.

The announcement was made during an emergency conference with Commissioners of Police and members of the press held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters in Abuja.

At the core of the message is a simple but important idea: policing must be accountable to the people it serves.

Disu emphasised that complaints submitted through the CRU will be treated with seriousness and confidentiality, and that disciplinary action will be taken against any officer found guilty after investigation.

He also urged Nigerians to use the system responsibly, stressing that effective policing depends on cooperation between citizens and law enforcement.

“The Nigeria Police Force assures citizens that all reports received through the CRU are treated with seriousness and confidentiality,” the statement noted.

Over the years, public concerns around police conduct in Nigeria have sparked national conversations about reform, accountability, and trust in law enforcement institutions.

This latest directive appears to be part of broader efforts to address those concerns by creating more direct and accessible channels for citizens to speak up.

Beyond reporting misconduct, the move also signals a push to rebuild public confidence in the system, an area that has often been strained by allegations of abuse and lack of accountability.

The police leadership says the goal is not just to respond to complaints, but to prevent misconduct through stronger oversight and a more transparent internal process.

For many Nigerians, the effectiveness of this initiative will ultimately depend on one key factor: whether reports lead to real consequences.

Because in the end, accountability is not just about having a platform to speak, it is about what happens after people speak.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
