POLICE LAUNCH NATIONWIDE CRACKDOWN ON HIDDEN AND DEFACED NUMBER PLATES

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the launch of a nationwide enforcement operation targeting vehicles with concealed, defaced, or otherwise altered number plates, as part of efforts to improve road safety and strengthen crime prevention.

According to the police, the operation will focus on identifying motorists who deliberately hide or tamper with their registration plates to avoid identification by law enforcement agencies and traffic monitoring systems. Authorities say such practices have increasingly been linked to criminal activities, including robbery, kidnapping, and hit-and-run incidents.

The Force Public Relations Office stated that officers across all state commands have been directed to intensify surveillance on major highways, urban centres, and checkpoints. Motorists found violating the law are expected to face arrest, fines, and possible prosecution in line with existing traffic regulations.

Officials explained that readable vehicle identification is essential for public safety, as it helps security agencies track offenders and respond more effectively to emergencies. They also urged drivers to ensure their vehicles comply fully with registration standards.

The police further appealed to the public to cooperate with enforcement officers and report suspicious vehicles with altered or obscured plates.

The nationwide operation is expected to continue in phases, with authorities emphasizing that the goal is not only enforcement but also deterrence, as part of broader efforts to reduce crime and improve road discipline across the country.
