The Ondo State Police Command has uncovered a car theft syndicate in Akure, leading to the recovery of a stolen Toyota Camry and the arrest of a suspect who allegedly bought the vehicle.

Police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, September 12, 2025. According to him, the Toyota Camry, originally golden in color, was stolen from Madam Akomolafe Bolanle’s residence in Akure on July 18, 2025. The thieves reportedly gained access to her home in the early hours of the morning, stole the car keys, and drove away with the vehicle along with other valuables.

After weeks of investigation, police operatives tracked the vehicle to Owo, where it had been repainted blue and hidden in the apartment of one Michael Olamilekan.

Upon interrogation, Olamilekan confessed that he purchased the car for N4 million from a man identified only as Adewumi, who is now on the run. The police revealed that the car had originally been bought by its rightful owner for N10 million in December 2024.

The Ondo Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner Adebowale Lawal, described the breakthrough as part of its renewed efforts to clamp down on criminal activities across the state.

Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate and bring them to justice.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
