POLICE USE DRONES TO RESCUE 16 KIDNAP VICTIMS IN EDO STATE
The Edo State Police Command has successfully rescued 16 kidnapped victims in separate operations carried out along the Benin–Lagos and Benin–Akure highways.
Police spokesperson Moses Yamu confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the victims, who were travellers, were abducted on August 23, 2025, when armed men blocked the highways.
According to Yamu, the rescue mission was a joint effort involving police operatives, tactical teams, vigilantes, and local hunters. The teams combed through the forests and used drones and other advanced technology to track and locate the kidnappers.
One of the victims who sustained gunshot injuries was quickly taken to the hospital by good Samaritans and is now responding to treatment.
The operation, personally led by Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, freed six victims along the Benin–Akure road, three along the Benin–Lagos road, while another seven regained their freedom on August 25.
Commending the efforts of the operatives, vigilantes, and hunters, the Commissioner said the synergy between security agencies and local communities has proven effective in tackling violent crimes.
“We are determined to rid our highways and communities of violent crime. With the support of technology like drones, and the collaboration of local structures, criminals will find no hiding place in Edo State,” the CP assured.
The police further pledged to intensify efforts until the remaining victims are rescued and the perpetrators brought to justice.
This comes days after gunmen abducted several passengers on an 18-seater bus in Owan West LGA. In that incident, social media activist Verydarkman (VDM) rescued the injured driver and rushed him to the hospital for treatment.
