The Bauchi State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling violent crime and terrorism with the inauguration of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).

Speaking during the inauguration on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, said the unit was established to address emerging security threats such as kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and other violent crimes across the state.

According to him, the initiative is designed to operate within the law, respect human rights, rely on intelligence-driven policing, and work closely with local communities.

Aliyu stressed that the VCRU is not a rebranded tactical squad but a newly structured operational unit founded on professionalism, discipline, accountability, and public trust.

He disclosed that officers selected for the unit underwent a rigorous screening process based on competence, integrity, discipline, physical fitness, and understanding of human rights principles.

A total of 54 officers were selected and trained in areas including intelligence-led policing, tactical operations, lawful arrest procedures, detention processes, use of force, professional conduct, and human rights.

The commissioner also announced the appointment of CSP Abdulrazak Musa as commander of the unit, citing his experience in tackling kidnapping, robbery, and banditry.

As part of efforts to strengthen accountability, Aliyu revealed that a civilian oversight board had been established to monitor the unit’s activities and foster public confidence.

The board includes representatives from the judiciary, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, religious bodies, community leaders, women's groups, and youth organisations.

He explained that the board would receive public feedback, support accountability measures, and serve as a bridge between the police and the communities they serve.

The police commissioner urged residents, community leaders, religious leaders, and youth groups to support the unit with credible information to aid crime prevention and security operations.

He also commended the Inspector-General of Police for promoting reforms within the force and appreciated the Bauchi State Government for its support of security agencies.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu, represented by the Wazirin Bauchi, Muhammad Kari, praised the police command for establishing the unit and described the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening security in the state.

The traditional ruler pledged the support and cooperation of traditional institutions towards ensuring the success of the initiative and maintaining peace across Bauchi State.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
