The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians and their supporters against damaging campaign posters, banners and billboards ahead of the 2027 elections.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has directed commissioners across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to prevent such incidents, investigate complaints and prosecute offenders.

In a statement on Wednesday, Force spokesperson CSP Aniete Iniedu said police had observed increasing cases of campaign materials being deliberately torn, defaced or removed.

He stressed that political loyalty did not justify destroying another candidate’s property or interfering with lawful campaigning.

“All political parties and candidates, irrespective of their affiliation or status, are entitled to equal protection under the law,” the statement said.

The police warned that those who sponsor, recruit or encourage others to destroy campaign materials could also be held accountable where evidence establishes their involvement.

The Force described the destruction of campaign property as conduct that could attract criminal prosecution under applicable laws.

Political parties, candidates and supporters were urged to campaign peacefully and respect one another’s rights.

The police said intimidation and political intolerance would not be allowed to undermine the electoral process, pledging action against anyone responsible for violence or property damage.
