The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political supporters and campaign groups against destroying or defacing campaign posters, billboards and other promotional materials belonging to opposing candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The warning comes amid increasing political activities across the country as parties and their supporters begin positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle.

The police stressed that political competition must be conducted within the provisions of the law, warning that the destruction of campaign materials could provoke confrontations, heighten political tensions and threaten public peace.

The Force urged political parties to educate their supporters on the importance of tolerance and respect for democratic principles, particularly as campaigns and political mobilisation gather momentum.

It also reminded candidates and their supporters that having different political opinions does not justify intimidation, harassment or deliberate damage to the property of opponents.

According to the police, individuals found engaging in acts capable of disrupting public order or inciting violence would be dealt with in accordance with existing laws.

The Force further encouraged political parties to report incidents of vandalism and other election-related offences through appropriate channels rather than resorting to retaliation.

The warning highlights concerns about political intolerance, which has frequently resulted in clashes between supporters of rival parties during election periods in Nigeria.

Campaign posters and billboards are important tools through which political candidates communicate their messages, introduce their programmes and seek public support. Their destruction can therefore create unnecessary hostility among political groups.

As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, the police have called for responsible political engagement, urging Nigerians to allow all parties and candidates to express their ambitions without intimidation or violence.

The credibility of the electoral process depends not only on the conduct of election officials but also on the willingness of political actors and their supporters to respect democratic rules and the rights of others.
