POLITICAL FIGURES CRITICIZE SEYI MAKINDE OVER STAGE JUMP DEMONSTRATION, QUESTIONING STAMINA DISPLAYS AS SUBSTITUTE FOR GOVERNANCE
Opposition stakeholders and political commentators react after Oyo State Governor and APM presidential candidate leaps off podium during Ondo town hall, challenging rival candidates to prove physical fitness ahead of 2027 election
Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has drawn sharp criticism from political figures and commentators following a dramatic physical display during a campaign event in Akure, Ondo State.
During the APM South-West Presidential Campaign Town Hall Meeting at the Ondo State International Conference Centre, Makinde jumped directly off the elevated stage before challenging rival presidential candidates, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to demonstrate similar physical agility, telling supporters to base their vote on physical fitness and endurance.
The stunt drew swift reactions across political circles, with figures including veteran journalist and political stakeholder Dele Momodu questioning the relevance of physical acrobatics to executive leadership. Critics argued that leadership demands policy substance, administrative competence, and governance track records rather than high-jumping or physical displays on stage.
However, Makinde's supporters and APM campaign allies defended the governor's action as a symbolic gesture emphasizing youthfulness, vigor, and the readiness required to tackle Nigeria's demanding governance challenges under the party's "Reset Nigeria" platform.
